Dr. Kelly Theis, Director of Therapy Services, is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in working with children and families. Dr. Theis provides therapy to children, adolescents, parents, and couples, and she conducts psychological evaluations. Her particular areas of expertise include parenting, trauma, depression, ADHD, and anxiety. She also is skilled in assisting individuals who are experiencing a transition, such as divorce, loss, adoption, or new parenthood. Dr. Theis understands the critical role that parents play in promoting a childs well-being and her treatment approach helps entire families become happier and healthier.
Dr. Theis graduated summa cum laude with a bachelors degree in psychology from James Madison University and she received a masters degree in psychology from Wake Forest University. At University of Miami, she completed her doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in clinical psychology with a specialization in children and families. Dr. Theis has conducted numerous research projects on parenting, marital conflict and family relationships. She also has published a chapter on the effects of post-divorce conflict on children and presented at conferences across the country.
Dr. Theis completed her predoctoral internship at Childrens National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She provided inpatient and outpatient treatment to children and adolescents, led parent education and social skills groups, and conducted psychological evaluations. Her postdoctoral fellowship was at the University of Virginia Health System, and included training in the Child and Family Psychiatry Clinic, the Family Stress Clinic, and the Mary D. Ainsworth Child-Parent Attachment Clinic.
In addition to clinical work, Dr. Theis has extensive experience as a clinical supervisor and a manager of several successful clinical programs at a non-profit community agency. Dr. Theis is married and has two sons. She likes to hike, travel, and cheer for the Redskins.
