Family Connection Ideas for Fall

Fall is here! The days are getting shorter, the weather is getting cooler, and everything is getting a little bit cozier. While every season is great for this, I find as we move into a comfortable and cozy season, it is a great time to refocus and find new ways to connect with our kids. One-on-one time has many benefits for all our relationships, including our relationships with each of our kids. At times, when we are in the busy season of life, or when we feel overwhelmed by daily responsibilities of juggling our own schedules, kids’ schedules, household duties, and work, setting aside one-on-one time seems impossible. Setting aside intentional time each week shows our kids the importance of our relationships with them, even starting small with 15 to 30 minutes each week. One-on-one time has many benefits including building trust, promoting development, providing an opportunity to learn something new (for both the child and parent), and building communication skills. Spending intentional time with our kids gives both the parents and child some time to unwind and enjoy each other’s company. Below are some ideas for a one-on-one fun time this fall.

Outdoor activities

  1. Go to a pumpkin patch or apple picking
  2. Go for a walk and see what you can find using the five senses (sight, touch, smell, hear, and taste)
  3. Sit by a bonfire and talk about your day
  4. Go to a playground or sit in your front yard and play “I Spy” with all the different colors out there
  5. Do a scavenger hunt to find some fun fall items

Indoor activities

  1. Bake a yummy dessert
  2. Make a new dinner together
  3. Pick out a fall-themed book to read together every night
  4. Have a fall-themed movie night
  5. Paint pumpkins or create a fall craft
  6. Make an obstacle course

One-on-one time together does not need to be time-consuming or expensive.  Just choose something you both will enjoy to build connection while enjoying the change of seasons!
